Venture Capital

There are many ways to support a growing business and help it get off the ground, and venture capital funding is a great option. Venture capital (also called VC) is often very competitive and difficult to get, but can be incredibly helpful for a young business with high potential.

Venture capitalists tend to pool third party investor money and assess high-potential, growing businesses in which to invest. The typical transaction trades cash for shares or a stake in the company, which will, in theory, become very lucrative upon an IPO or later sale.

The big influx of cash at the beginning of a company’s growth can be a huge stimulus and can lead to much larger success down the road. For this reason, and because venture capitalists tend to have very significant funds, the market for obtaining VC funding can be extremely competitive.

Venture capitalists tend to take much larger risks than their lending counterparts at banks and other more formal institutions. It is probably most famous for the huge VC investments, both wildly successful and terrible failures, in Silicon Valley in the past couple of decades. The high-risk, high-reward nature of venture capital makes it a very interesting industry.
